The Night Palace - Chapter 1: The Dream Begins

It was a peaceful night, a night where everyone should be tucked up and cosy in bed. As for me, Luke, Resus and Cleo, we were peacefully asleep in our shared, comfortable bed, dreaming. Dreaming of an adventure. As you know, adventures happen in our wildest fantasies, plus, in bed at night. That dream began in a tree...

Luke, Resus, Cleo and I were four bears who slept in a tree with our family. Our branch was thin and fragile and very uncomfortable. Our branch was near to breaking, and we tried sleeping further away from the branch that was about to break. One night, the branch started to wobble again, and it broke. "Wooooooaaaaaaaahhh!" As we fell, we transformed into our normal human forms - a girl, a werewolf, a vampire and an Egyptian mummy and landed with a bump on the soft purple grass. We got up and dusted ourselves off. "What are we going to do?" I asked, "We never go to sleep up trees like these!" "We've got to think of a solution to our sleep problems," said Luke. We thought altogether for a moment, then Cleo had an idea. "I know! Have you heard of The Night Palace?" "The Night Palace?" the boys and I asked. "It's a place a long way away where you can get a peaceful night's sleep. A wonderful, majestic place somewhere in Dreamland, with soft places where you can go to sleep soundly." "Sounds sleepy," yawned Resus, "I'm yawning just thinking about it." "Then we have no time to waste," I said, "I will be your leader on this quest. Come on, we're going to find the Night Palace!"

So off we set across the yellow brick path, not skipping and singing like a certain blue-dressed girl and her unique friends, further and further away from the forest, until we reached a field. We stopped at a huge, steep hill with blue grass. "Hold hands," I said, and we climbed higher and higher up the hill. The hill was indeed steep, and we had to hold on all the way, but at last we made it uphill. We could see a whole seaside before us. "Woohoo!" we cheered, and we tumbled downhill, feeling the soft grass and the squishy ground as we rolled. We were squealing and laughing as we stretched out our arms, and when we landed at the bottom in a heap, we laughed and hugged.

We stepped out onto the yellow-gold sand and saw a whole, empty beach for us to wander around. We took one step onto the sand with our bare feet, and it felt really hot from the heat of the sun. "Ouch! Ow!" we cried, running across the sand, until we felt something liquidy and blue around our feet. Cleo on the other hand didn't mind. She was lying on the sand wearing her favourite blue shades, on a beach blanket under a beach parasol left behind by a family who had carelessly left it alone on the beach. The boys and I felt how cool the water is around our feet, and rolled up the legs of our pyjama bottoms to splash about in it. The foam in the sea was unusually pink when it washed up onto the shore. It looked fluffy, yet it still looked familiar. I took a handful of foam and tasted it. It was cotton candy! Candyfloss! Yummy yum yum!
